The image acquisition facilities


All the equipment for the Optical/video service is managed by CNES/CSG apart from the high-speed cameras, such as those installed at the ZL3, which belong to Arianespace.  The Optical/video service is responsible for maintaining all equipment and facilities used for image acquisition.

The high-speed launch cameras

During lift-off, the cameras are placed right up close to the launcher.  

Process for filming the launch: The cameras are located around the Launch Zone in four shelters, on the table itself and in the flame trench.  With daytime launches, another one can be installed high up on the Launch Zone water tower, on request.  These high-speed and ultra-high-speed cameras are operated remotely from an optical control desk in the No.3 Launch Control Centre (CDL3) using a pre-programmed controller.  At the moment of launch, the person in charge of the high-speed optical equipment (ROR) needs to know the exact status of all the available equipment.  In addition to these facilities, two cameras in the shelters are set aside for flight safety, and a further dozen cameras are installed around the launch bunker for use by Range Safety and Arianespace. Six days before the launch, the equipment is validated: the cameras are loaded and begin rolling, and activation tests (known as line tests) are carried out.  Final loading and a full inspection take place the day before the launch, after the launcher has been transferred to the Launch Zone.  On launch day itself, there is a full systems status check.  The bay windows of the shelters are opened to avoid any stray reflections and to make way for the searchlights which will illuminate the upper part of the launcher.  At T-0, on the launch table, the cameras film the lift-off for as long as possible.  A series of long-distance shots is then obtained at Montabo, Toucan and Ile Royale, whose cinetelescope is fitted with two silver-halide cameras and infrared cameras.

The silver-halide video equipment is scheduled to be replaced eventually by digital equipment.
