Chemical laboratories and Calypso

These are activities involving the management, exploitation and maintenance of physico-chemical measurement facilities on the base. The analyses and measurements taken involve the manipulation of chemical products.

* Pollution:

 - reject of propellant effluents or other effluents such as oils, Iso Propyllic Alcohol (IPA) and all

   residues from analyses (mercury etc)

 - rejection of propellant oxidants and fuel samples

 - production of consumables for all laboratory activities

   (fouled pipettes and plastic products, gloves, accumulator etc)

 - risk of spills from manipulations of an atomic emission spectrophotometer,

 - storage of chemical products: risks of leakage, seeping or fire due to incompatible chemical

   products

* Procedures introduced:

- systematic recovery after manipulation of effluents and all analysis residues in collection

   barrels, which are classified by type of waste

- specialised bins and retaining tanks, including under the spectrophotometer

- secured storage of chemical products: a dedicated building and installation of ‘retaining

  shelving for flasks’

- reflex sheets and safety instructions
