The Galliot site

The Galliot site is located on the Montagne des Pères, about fifteen kilometres from the Technical Centre and has a panoramic view of Kourou and its surroundings...

Built on the southern peak of the Montagne des Pères in Kourou, nearly 20 km from the launch complexes, the Galliot site is in direct view of the launcher.  This site is used for launches towards the north, as well as the east.

Historically, the Montagne des Pères earned its name from the Jesuits, who worked to develop the Kourou area from the 17th century onwards.

On this hill, the Galliot station is run by the Technical Manager for the Telemetry system which falls under the CNES/CSG Measurement Acquisition department, together with three other engineers and a CNES secretary, and supported by industrial service providers who are responsible for operating and maintaining the telemetry equipment.  Occasionally, their missions are considered to be 'non-over-rideable', which means that if for some reason they are unable to carry them out, the launch cannot take place.
